Our aim was to create an exhibition showcasing vital new film and video work by artists based around the world that didn't fall into the traps of representing either nations or theme but rather participated in another kind of internationalism - one faster and more headstrong and critically more demanding.
'Biennale! Artist Film and Video' is in fact not a biennale. It is not sited in a specific city and it will not return there in two years. Biennale! originated in London at temporarycontemporary, an artist-run space in Deptford, South East London. It was devised by artist-curator Anthony Gross in part as a means to instigate an international dialogue necessary for the development of temporarycontemporary. Half of the works were selected by international guest curators that temporarycontemporary had worked with over the past years. We asked them to select works using the exact same criteria as us: we chose works that we feel are the most pertinent in our given context that we have access to. The selectors interpreted that brief and their selection was final. The other half of the exhibition is made up of video artists temporarycontemporary have contact with from art school, friends of friends, or by having seen work in other shows. In this way, the exhibition is not just a presentation of current video art from around the world but also a presentation of how subjective and social connections form between artworks, the scenes and the artists emerging from them.

In large part thanks to the efforts of two of the guest selectors, Davide Quadrio of BizArt (Shanghai) and Nataline Colonello (Beijing), 'Biennale!' will be shown in 5 artist-run spaces throughout China. There is no denying the need for local spaces around the world to engage on an international level and it is important that this dialogue is achievable in particular for the artist-run space. We are very pleased to be working with BizArt, Dashanzi, and Redskyart Space, Lijiang Studios and Tankloft, and hope it is the beginning of further collaborations.
